WHY TRANSIT?
Did you know that compared to passenger cars, transit systems are significantly safer. Trips with similar destinations result in two million fewer deaths, injuries and accidents when made by transit than by car. The National Safety Council estimates that riding the bus is over 170 times safer than automobile travel. Public transportation is also crucial in saving energy. Americans use more energy resources for transportation than any other activity, nearly 43% of total energy consumption. Public transportation saves more than 855 million gallons of gasoline annually or 45 million barrels of oil a year. This number is equivalent to the energy used to heat, cool, and operate one-forth of all American homes annually. Rapid Transit System will travel over 480,000 miles in 2008 and provide over 341,000 passenger trips.
